COVID-19 Business Impact: Accelerating Your Response

April 13, 2020

First and foremost, COVID-19 is a health and humanitarian crisis affecting thousands of people. It is also having a growing impact on the global economy. As we face off the global pandemic, enterprises are finding themselves caught amid a damaging market disruption. Enterprises of every size are impacted in some way ranging from the reduction in raw or industrial materials production, disruption to supply chains, sweeping closure of borders, retail stores and higher education institutions. The industries impacted are wide ranging:

  • Automotive
  • Higher Education
  • Healthcare
  • Hospitality and Entertainment
  • Oil & Gas
  • Raw Materials
  • Retailers (Consumer)
  • Transportation

To help accelerate your response to COVID-19-driven business changes, below are five recommendations.

Analyze Business

Each enterprise must analyze what is required for the immediate period to stabilize and run their business smoothly.  Are employees able to collaborate and communicate in a productive manner? Does any new teleworking technology create security gaps?  What if you lose critical staff with specific expertise, do you have a way to augment the team with that expertise?  Has your engagement with customers online increased, if so, can your systems manage the increase in demand?

Assess Budgets and Projects

At this point, management is likely asking department heads to review planned projects and possibly delay spending.  Each project should be studied for short-term and long-term benefits.  Does the project help to reduce costs, provide better performance and increase productivity, fill a security gap or address a compliance audit finding?

Protect Critical Systems and Data

During this global health crisis, enterprises must remain vigilant in protecting their network communications, systems and data. The US Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) website on March 15, 2020 thwarted an apparent distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attempt due to their preparedness.  Throughout 2019 healthcare providers were the target of hundreds of ransomware attacks.  Now is not the time for organizations to be complacent and they must continue to take appropriate precautions. As employees migrate to teleworking at home, enterprises must validate they are not creating a weak spot in their security perimeter as greater use of teleconferencing and IoT technologies increases.

Evaluate Business Continuity

These extraordinary times should be viewed as an opportunity to revisit what is required to support and enable a distributed workforce. With more employees working remotely, this is a good time to evaluate all aspects of the enterprise’s Business Continuity. Remote access is not limited to protecting infrastructure, data and applications, but should broadly include collaboration tools, endpoint security and mobility management.

Flexibility and Innovation

Now is the time to be flexible and seek innovative solutions to address challenges facing an enterprise.  At Secure-24 we pride ourselves in developing a customized solution for each client.  Each client’s requirements dictate a different solution ranging from remote management, staff augmentation, secure scalable collaboration platform, expedited migration to public cloud or comprehensive managed services that include end point detection and response.
