Background
In 1995, the Company’s product development group converted most of their 2-D legacy drawings and aperture cards from a hardcopy format to an electronic image format. These electronic drawings and associated metadata were then hosted and managed by a third party supplier.
Business Need
Fast forward more than a dozen years and the existing system for storing their 2-D engineering content that has been developed by the external vendor had become out of date, unreliable, poorly managed and costly to maintain. There were several of these types of systems in a number of different locations, all running on different platforms.
The Company needed to consolidate and create one globally centralized location and system for storing and managing all of their 2-D engineering content. They wanted a system that could accommodate future growth and provide their engineers and selected suppliers with a secure and convenient way to access product information via the web. The engineers also needed an easy and reliable system for adding new product drawings as they are released throughout the year.
To accomplish all the objectives of the company’s product development group, the hosting environment and the new application needed to be highly available, scalable and 100% secure – all the time.
The Solution
Secure-24 designed, developed and implemented a highly secure and robust document management application that is utilized globally for the storage, retrieval and management of 2-D product development engineering released drawings and illustrations.
The new application includes logical partitions for departmental archives, standard parts,“shown-on” drawing information, engineering specifications, supplier/partner parts and pre-released drawings and illustrations.
Drawings are assigned part numbers that are provided by the company and ingested into the system for retrieval by authorized users. The application is available to all client authorized users and approved suppliers, via the company’s intranet utilizing a VPN network.
This system is available to more than 17,500 global users. Authorized users can view and print released production drawings from their desktop PC. Users also have the ability to view the associated parts that are shown on the main part.
The new solution complies with all of the company’s internal and external IT security and control standards.[/columns]
