(BIRMINGHAM, Michigan - Dec. 6, 2006) - "Open source is good" is the general consensus according to the Secure-24/IT-Harvest seminar on Wednesday morning. Business owners and IT professionals from all over Michigan gathered to hear Secure-24, Dell, Red Hat, EMC, and Doner present a case study about a ground-breaking secure hosting solution.
Doner is the largest publicly held advertising agency in the U.S. They manage marketing assets and creative development for its customers, including the famous "Zoom Zoom" campaign for Mazda. Doner developed a customized application called MAX to specifically manage, search, and retain the myriad of ?critical media assets" they continuously develop. The challenge at that point was to ensure that the infrastructure the application runs on would be highly available, easily scaleable, highly secure, and meticulously compliant with industry standards such as Sarbanes-Oxley.
Doner engaged Secure-24 to architect a solution as well as provide ongoing management on everything up to the MAX application. Secure-24 had designed, deployed, and now maintains and scales the solution appropriately. Included in the solution is the coordination of the proper technologies in order to ensure that the solution was certified appropriately and supported effectively. The end result combines EMC?s storage systems, Dell?s hardware and centralized support for all hardware and software components, and Red Hat-supported open source Linux OS and GFS. The use of enterprise-backed open source GFS is particularly impressive due to the file sizes it supports: up to eight exabites, one exabite being equivalent to 1024 pedabites.
"The challenge in bringing different technologies together - especially when using 'leading-edge' components - is making sure that it all works together," says Secure-24 CIO Matthias Horch.
This secure hosting solution is one of the first to employ enterprise-certified open source technology. Open source technology has been long-praised for its organic, evolutionary, and relentless self-improvement and regulation through a highly-educated and symbiotic community where problems are solved almost simultaneously as they are found. Such a combination of corporate sponsorship from industry leaders such as Dell, Red Hat, and EMC with open source continuous innovation moves the technology industry toward a revolutionary new business model.
